New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) is pleased to celebrate Emilija Salapura, a first-year Practical Nurse student, as the inaugural recipient of the NBCC Alumni Trailblazer Bursary.
From a young age, Emilija knew she wanted a career in health care. Today, through the Practical Nurse program, she is developing the hands-on skills and clinical experience needed to pursue that goal.
The Alumni Trailblazer Bursary was created to support first-generation learners like Emilija, helping remove financial barriers so students can stay focused on their academic goals. Made possible by affinity partner TD Insurance, the bursary recognizes students who demonstrate strong motivation, a clear sense of purpose, and a meaningful connection between their education and their future—while also representing the confidence the NBCC alumni community places in recipients and their potential.
Among many compelling submissions highlighting the determination and resilience of NBCC learners, Emilija stood out for her passion for nursing and her thoughtful reflection on how her education is preparing her to make a difference in the lives of others.
For Emilija, receiving the bursary provides more than financial relief. It helps ease financial pressures, allowing her to focus more fully on her studies and hands-on learning. For first-generation learners, this kind of support can be a turning point—reducing the need to balance work and school, strengthening persistence, and creating space to succeed academically.
As the first-ever recipient, Emilija embodies the spirit of the Alumni Trailblazer Bursary: ambition, dedication, and the courage to forge new paths through education.
NBCC Alumni congratulates Emilija and greatly appreciates its alumni partners for their ongoing support of student success.
The next application window for the Trailblazer Bursary will be open from October 1–31. Since 2016, NBCC Alumni has contributed over $100,000 to student supports, helping to transform lives and communities.
Receiving the Alumni Trailblazer Bursary means I can focus fully on my education and developing the skills I need to make a difference in patients’ lives.
