New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) has a long history of giving back to the campus communities it calls home. The College’s students, staff, and Alumni are carrying on this proud tradition of service as communities adapt to the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis.
As physical distancing and widespread lay-offs bring significant hardship to society’s most vulnerable populations, NBCC is stepping up and pitching in to help.
In Miramichi, Campus leadership heeded the call to help provide food for local seniors in need. Following up on the volunteer service that students perform for seniors through the Robertson Institute for Community Leadership each fall, the Campus contributed funding to the Carrefour Beausoleil meal initiative, providing six meals each for senior clients.
In Moncton, NBCC’s culinary program donated the perishables that were on hand when face-to-face instruction ceased. Milk, eggs, and fresh vegetables were contributed to the Humanity Project’s efforts to feed the city’s children, seniors, homeless, and low-income families.
At the Fredericton Campus, Information Technology: Programmer Analyst student Phoebe Nguyen answered a local start-up’s call for help. Sensory Friendly Solutions, which provides an online database of spaces, products and services for those with sensory challenges, needed assistance in collecting data about special shopping hours for vulnerable populations during the COVID-19 crisis. Phoebe, who had previously developed an app for the company as part of her work-integrated learning, volunteered her time to gather 189 new listings of special coronavirus shopping accommodations.
These are just some of the ways that NBCC is continuing to transform lives and communities, especially during a crisis.
