A Multi-NBCC Graduate, Emily Uses Every New Skill As Another Way to Help Others

For as long as Emily Ross can remember, there has always been something more to learn. Another question to ask. Another skill to master. And, most importantly, another way to help someone. Her insatiable love of learning is driven by a deeper calling: to connect with people from all walks of life and help them feel included.

That sense of connection was woven into Emily’s childhood in St. Andrews, where salty ocean air drifts through the streets, piebald “Spirit Deer” wander through town, and neighbours greet one another by name. It was here that Emily watched her grandfather and father step forward as volunteer firefighters, witnessing firsthand what it means to serve your community. Today, Emily carries that three-generation tradition forward as a volunteer firefighter herself. But Emily’s commitment to helping others began long before she put on a firefighter’s uniform.

At just three years old, she began learning American Sign Language (ASL) after befriending a Deaf classmate. What began as a way to communicate with someone she cared about sparked a lifelong passion for inclusion. From those early years, Emily discovered that learning could be a bridge to another person. And she has been building those bridges ever since.

She initially pursued post-secondary studies in sign language, but as her understanding grew, so did her desire to support a broader community. She returned to school, this time at NBCC, earning her Human Services diploma in 2021 and later completing Firefighter 1 – NFPA 1001 in 2023. And not long after, her learning continued with NBCC’s Non-Profit Leadership graduate program, where she expanded her knowledge and gained practical skills in grant writing, program development, financial management and governance. For Emily, each new skill is another tool she can use to better serve the people and community around her. As she puts it, “your education is the one thing no one can ever take away.”

Today, Emily is once again back at NBCC, pursuing her Level 2 Firefighter certification, and is working as an Executive Assistant at Community Living Centre. In her role, she supports staff, participants and caregivers, coordinates the summer recreation program, and helps ensure people have the resources and support they need. One of the most rewarding parts of her work is seeing participants achieve their goals and witnessing the joy that comes from their hard work.

Whether responding to a call as a volunteer firefighter, supporting someone through a difficult moment, or setting an example of what it means to be inclusive, Emily turns everything she learns into action. She has made a life of building bridges, serving as the connection and support others need.

“In the years ahead, I hope to continue making a positive difference in my community by showing up, helping where I’m needed, and creating spaces where everyone feels valued and supported,” says Emily.

Now, as a 2026 NBCC Alumni Recognition Award recipient, Emily’s commitment to learning, community, and inclusion is being recognized.

People say they would like to meet their hero, but I raised mine.

NBCC’s Robertson Institute for Community Leadership proudly supports our communities through the Community Engagement Fund. Thanks to this initiative, a $250 donation has been made in Emily’s honour to a non-profit organization of her choice, Make-A-Wish® Canada.
