Following in her sister’s footsteps: NBCC international student earns Alumni Family Scholarship

Jennifer Englis is continuing her family’s NBCC legacy as the proud recipient of a 2025 Alumni Family Scholarship – a bi-annual award, generously sponsored by TD Insurance, that supports and encourages future generations of NBCC alumni.

When Jennifer Englis made the life-changing decision to leave behind a stable career in Singapore and pursue her education in Canada, she wasn’t stepping into the unknown alone—she was following in the footsteps of someone she deeply admired: her sister, Sucilyn Abac.

In 2021, Sucilyn made the bold move from Qatar to Canada with her husband and two young children, seeking a better life and new opportunities. She found both in Fredericton, New Brunswick, graduating in 2023 from NBCC’s Business Administration: Management program

“With two young children—aged 6 and 10—we wanted to find a place that not only offered quality education for me, but also a safe, welcoming environment where our kids could thrive,” shared Sucilyn. “Choosing NBCC’s Fredericton campus felt like the right step, not just for my education, but for our family’s journey toward building a new life in Canada.”

Her decision didn’t just transform her own life—it paved the way for her sister to pursue her own NBCC journey.

“I was deciding between studying in Brisbane, Australia or coming to Canada,” Jennifer recalled. “It was a tough choice, but knowing my sister was already here in Fredericton made all the difference. She helped me believe that I could start fresh, and that NBCC would be a place where I’d feel supported.”

Now enrolled in the same Business Administration: Management program, Jennifer is thriving. She credits NBCC’s student-focused environment and approachable instructors for helping her feel confident about her future.

“The support I’ve received—from faculty, staff, and my peers—has been incredible. It’s not just about academics; it’s about preparing us for real-world success.”

Outside the classroom, Jennifer is making a meaningful impact in her new community. She has contributed to events with the Fredericton Filipino community, including helping out at local gatherings such as the Christmas celebrations. Looking ahead, she’s also exploring a variety of career paths—from procurement and material planning to human resources and even the military. No matter where she lands, she’s confident that her time at NBCC has laid a strong foundation.

“I’m interested in exploring several industries and career paths after graduation,” she shared. “I believe the skills and knowledge I’ve gained at NBCC have prepared me well, and I’m confident that I’ll be successful in whichever path I take.”

Jennifer’s story is one of courage, connection, and family. Thanks to the support of her sister—and the generosity of NBCC alumni—she’s not only continuing a legacy but building one of her own. Learn more about NBCC’s Alumni Family Scholarships here
