From Student to Mentor: Bill’s Journey in the Trades to NBCC

Meet Bill, the heartbeat of our Industrial Mechanics and Mechanical Technician programs at New Brunswick Community College (NBCC)!

Bill’s journey into the trades began in 1976, when he enrolled in the machine shop program at NBCC Moncton. His NBCC instructor had a knack for making learning exciting—inspiring Bill to dive headfirst into the world of machines and mechanics. Little did he know he would one day carry that legacy forward, shaping future tradespeople with the same enthusiasm.

After graduating, he began his career with an apprenticeship at CN Rail. He later honed his skills by running a machine shop in Nova Scotia and exploring manufacturing innovations in Richibucto, NB. This breadth of knowledge made him a natural fit when he joined NBCC in 2014 as an instructor.

Teaching was a new challenge, but Bill rose to it with his signature approach: storytelling. He draws from his decades of experience in the field to share engaging tales that illustrate how classroom skills translate to real-world applications. From welding and hydraulics to mechanical systems, Bill’s lessons come alive through practical examples and personal anecdotes.

When asked about his favourite moment since joining NBCC, Bill shares that it’s watching his students light up when they grasp a complex concept or discover their passion for the trade.
