NBCC Instructor Inspires Future Cybersecurity Professionals Through Leadership and Volunteerism

In today’s digital world, cybersecurity is more essential than ever. At NBCC, we’re proud to have instructors like Ben McHarg, who not only train the next generation of cybersecurity professionals but actively transform the industry through leadership and volunteerism. More than an educator, Ben is a mentor and community builder, dedicating his time to initiatives like CyberSci, the Atlantic Cybersecurity Collective, and CivicTech Saint John.

With over 20 years of experience in various IT roles, Ben discovered that mentoring others was the most rewarding part of his career. Inspired to start teaching in 2018, he seized the opportunity to step into the classroom when NBCC launched its Cybersecurity post-graduate program—and he hasn’t looked back since.

Drawing on his extensive industry experience, and aligned with the Canadian Cybersecurity Curriculum Guide, Ben ensures that students are prepared for the rapidly evolving and fast-paced demands of the Cybersecurity industry. “It may sound basic, but our focus is on teaching analytical thinking and continuous learning,” he says. “We teach students foundational knowledge, show them how to approach new problems, adapt to emerging technologies, and work effectively as a team—because in this field, collaboration is key.”

One of the program’s highlights, and a student favourite in the second year, is the Capstone Project—a three-week simulated enterprise environment that challenges students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.  They begin by attacking an unfamiliar network, only to later discover that their own network has been compromised by their peers. The challenge? Investigate the breach, identify vulnerabilities, and defend against future attacks—all while continuing their own offensive operations. “It’s as real as it gets,” says Ben. “Students apply the knowledge, tools and techniques, and security systems they have learned in a hands-on, virtual setting.”

Ben’s commitment goes beyond the classroom, as his volunteer efforts connect individuals in IT fields and create opportunities for learners. Through CivicTech Saint John, students collaborate with community groups in need of technical expertise to solve social and community challenges while gaining hands-on experience. Also, as a founding member of the Atlantic Cybersecurity Collective, he has worked to build and strengthen the local Cybersecurity community. This group brings together students, novices, and experts through conferences and networking events.

Among Ben’s many initiatives, CyberSci holds a special place as his main passion project. Each year, college and university teams come together to demonstrate their cybersecurity skills. “I describe it to colleagues as the Skills Competition for cybersecurity students,” he says. As a member of the national organizing committee, a Team Canada Coach, and Regional Director for Atlantic Canada, Ben helps to bring this event to life, creating direct connections to career opportunities for Cybersecurity students. The regional events are a highlight, offering students the chance to showcase their abilities, network, and possibly land a job. The winning regional teams also earn a trip to Ottawa to compete at the national level. “Companies looking to hire top cybersecurity talent sponsor the event, allowing them to interact with students during the competition and interview candidates afterward,” Ben explains. “Some students walk away with job offers, while others are fast-tracked through the interview process.”

Through his dedication to teaching and volunteer work, Ben is bridging the gap between students and employers in the cybersecurity sector, both in New Brunswick and beyond. His passion for the field is empowering the next generation to think critically, adapt to evolving threats, and collaborate effectively. As cyber risks continue to grow, so does the demand for skilled professionals, and with instructors like Ben leading the charge, NBCC graduates are entering the workforce ready to protect and innovate in our digital world.

For students seeking a career with purpose, opportunity, and a vibrant community, NBCC’s Cybersecurity post-graduate program provides the perfect launchpad. Learn more here.
